Popularly known as Sarbajaya, the mother of Apu in Apu Trilogy in 1955, Karuna Banerjee was born on 25 th Dec, 1919 in Calcutta. She graduated from Jogamaya College. Some of her memorable films are Pather Panchali which was her debut film Aparajito, Devi, Kanchenjungha, Interview etc. In 1959 she won BAFTA for her performance in Aparajito. Apart from Satyajit Ray she acted for Ritwik Ghatak and for Mrinal Sen in Interview in 1971. Her collection of her writings was published as An Actress In Her Time and another book named Sarbajaya in both Bengali and English. She died on 13 th Nov, 2001.
